The year is winding down, and the Christmas holiday season is upon us. Some say it’s “the most wonderful time of the year.” For many, it is a time when the soundtrack of the season is just as important as the décor.

The Backstory

According to the Oxford University Press, the Christmas musical tradition began in the United States over 200 years ago. However, its popularity grew exponentially with the rise of the radio, television, and film industries in the 20th century.

Christmas music crosses all genres and age groups. It ranges from the sacred to the secular. And while technically Christmas is a Christian holiday, people of all faiths listen to and even create music celebrating the season.

Countless Christmas songs have withstood the test time. This type of music is so popular, most radio stations with a music format play some Christmas music during this season. Some stations even opt to exclusively play Christmas music in the weeks leading up to December 25th. In the spirit of the holidays Upscale writer Dr. Adia Winfrey did a deep dive and compiled a list of Christmas songs with soul.
