You may have seen me on shows like Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse, Survivors Remorse, or Love Is __ , but when I’m not filming on set, I’m usually doing what I’m doing right now- writing. Tiffany Block is my stage name and my legal name. It’s classic with a little bit of edge. I’ve grown into it quite nicely. As I write this article from a high-rise rooftop on a sunny day in downtown Los Angeles, there are just a few things I have to say.
On Being Fearless
I relocated to Los Angeles for the first time when I was just 22. I didn’t know anyone here, and for a long time, I didn’t understand just how far it was from my hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida. I believe strongly that fearlessness is in my blood. I come from a lineage of women who left home to make a better life for themselves and their families.
It started with my maternal grandmother, I recently learned. She grew up in a small town in Alabama. She left her hometown to find more work in NYC and later, settled in Florida. My mother left Florida to enlist in the army for more opportunities, which is where she met my father. I come from women who were willing to leave their comfort zones to make a better life for their families. I know I’m a product of my grandmother’s prayers and my goal is to continue to expand my fearlessness so that the next generation can see even less limits. People often ask me if I was afraid to move 3,000 miles away from home to pursue acting. When I reflect on it, it feels like I never really thought enough of it to be afraid. Or maybe I’m afraid of so many things that I know better than to allow it to debilitate me. Fear comes. We can’t stop fear. So I have decided to do it afraid.
On Designing a Life
I’ve always been creative and artistic, but I also appreciate the security of a bi-weekly direct deposit. When I surrendered to being an artist, I had to adjust to the realities of a freelance career. That meant finding other revenue streams. It took roughly seven years, but eventually I was able to launch a private social media management firm – The Branding Standard & Company. I’ve been in business for five years and I hope to eventually employ more women while helping brands grow their online presence. I actually acquired my biggest client the same day I was filming an episode of Love Is ___ on OWN. Working for myself has given me the freedom to create. I can work from set or home and I actually enjoy my jobs and believe that has been the key to maintaining alignment. I am learning to accept things I cannot control and I do my best to immediately address and eradicate those things I con. Most of the time, I’m doing things I like to do and fortunately, those things also make me money. I don’t pray for discounts. I pray to make enough money to be able to afford what I want. I strive to design my life to suit my needs. These days, I need to be bi-coastal. One day, I’ll need to design a life that can accommodate a husband and children. I look forward to life’s transitions because they’re always bringing me closer to what I told God I wanted.
