Upscale Magazine Media Correspondent Tara S Merchant interviews Sophia J Thomas:
Q: How did you get started in the world of cooking?
A: Oh, it all started when I was just 3 years old! I used to help my parents in the kitchen, mixing ingredients and having so much fun. I realized cooking was my thing, and I fell in love with it from a young age. I just turned 14 and I want to be a Master chef one day!
Q: What inspired you to start SJ Savory Kitchen?
A: Well, when the pandemic hit and we all had to stay home, I saw that kids like me needed to learn how to cook. So, I started SJ Savory Kitchen to help families by sharing yummy recipes and tips that are perfect for everyone to enjoy!
Q: Which celebrity chefs have recognized your talent?
A: It’s been so amazing to have celebrity chefs like Rachel Ray, Carla Hall, and Sugar Chef notice what I do. It feels like a dream come true! Their support and kind words mean a lot to me.
Q: Tell us about your venture SJ Cookware and its mission.
A: With SJ Cookware, I wanted to make sure families stay safe while cooking. I created cool stuff like aprons, chef hats, mittens, and pot holders that are both stylish and safe. It’s all about having fun in the kitchen while being protected!
Q: How do you give back to the community?
A: Giving back is super important to me. My parents are Veterans, so I work with veteran non-profits to send care-packages to our brave soldiers overseas. I also support charities like No Kid Hungry, because everyone deserves love and good food.
Q: Have you received any awards for your achievements?
A: Yes, I’ve been lucky to receive awards for my leadership. I got the National “Girl of Merit” award in 2018 and 2019. Plus, Senator Lucy McBath gave me a special Certificate of Recognition in 2022. It’s awesome to be recognized for doing what I love!
Q: Could you tell us about your media appearances and features?
A: It’s been so cool to be on TV shows like Fox5 “Good Day DC” and ABC7 “Good Morning Washington.” I’ve also been in magazines like Authority Magazine and Teen Cruze Magazine (twice!). And guess what? I even made history as the first person of color on the cover of Teen Hi Life!
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your personal time?
A: Besides cooking, I love spending time with my family and friends. We do fun things together and watch scary movies, which gets me all excited. Oh, and I have a dog named Marley and cat named Logan. They are so cute.
Q: How can people follow you?
A: They can follow you me on Instagram @sophiajthomasofficial and my website is www.sophiajthomas.com
