While in office, we lived for Michelle Obama’s gab-worthy garb, and now we get to experience it once more with one of Target’s latest designer collections.

Obama gave new meaning to “storming the Capitol” as she brought on such unpredictable slayage during President Joe Biden’s inaugural ceremony on January 20, 2021. This brisk afternoon beckoned for politicians, government officials, and celebrities alike to layer up. Dutifully, they swarmed in by the dozens and dressed to the nines.

All of America witnessed as attendees flooded the grounds in style, and on a very fitting red (and blue) carpet. Notable guests, including Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, stunned per usual; but an unexpected uproar sent social media into a frenzy.

Twitter gawked at the former first lady’s monochromatic overcoat and culotte combo, and designer Sergio Hudson swiftly surfaced as the atelier behind the look that had the internet in a chokehold.

Hudson drenched Lady Obama in richly complex wine-colored hues, complimenting her warm undertones. The South Carolina native took to his mission with a sleek approach: neatly- tucked turtleneck, somewhat high-waisted trousers, boot-grazing hemline. He looped in a matching gold-buckle waist belt, and topped off a seemingly simple outfit with a well-tailored coat. Hudson added black leather gloves to complete the look.

This remarkably momentous occasion would forever change the trajectory of Hudson’s career. Shortly thereafter, Sergio masterfully crafted looks for Beyonce, Priyanka Chopra, and many more.

Now, on the heels of New York Fashion Week 2022, Hudson is set to debut his latest designer collaboration with Target on Sunday, October 9, just weeks after accepting Harlem’s Fashion Row 2022 Designer of the Year Award and presenting his Spring 2023 Collection.

Quite visibly, Hudson draws from elements of Obama’s coveted inaugural outfit, but this time around, he’s bringing even more sophisticated separates in monochrome doses, easy jewel-toned staple pieces, and sensual suiting at affordable price points. His signature styles exude elegance, and his accessories truly underscore his attunement with feminine flair. Prints and mix-and-match additions transform Sergio’s timeless garments into refreshing takes.

In an interview with People magazine, Hudson described the partnership as a labor of love that enables him to make his pieces accessible to his everyday supporters. On the high end, Hudson said his pieces typically  range from $5,000-$8,000, which is likely unattainable for the masses.

Hudson tells People, “I come from very humble beginnings, and the people in my family who support me shop at Target.” He continued, “So when we were presented with this opportunity, I felt that I could use it as a love letter to those people who have supported me and still would support me if they could.
