The 2023 edition of the LA Afrobeats Block Party and Jollof Cook-Off on July 22 was one for the books! From the sizzling jollof rice to the mesmerizing live performances and DJs, dazzling red-carpet moments, to the vibrant popup shops and mouthwatering taste of Africa, Afropolitan Cities brought Africa to Los Angeles (LA) in the most sensational way.


This year’s event has been proclaimed an overwhelming success, boasting a large attendance. The energy and enthusiasm created an electric atmosphere, making this one of the largest and most memorable gatherings to date.

The heart of the event was undoubtedly the Jollof Cook-Off, where representatives from various African nations put their culinary skills to the test, battling it out for the title of the ultimate Jollof Master. The competition was fierce, with the aroma of tantalizing spices, as samples of jollof from six African countries were dished up for the indulgence of the event guests.

After an intense battle, the people of LA cast their votes and Liberia emerged undisputed champion, proudly represented by incredible chef “Mamie Peppa.” Her Jollof rice dish impressed the judges and delighted the taste buds of everyone fortunate enough to sample it.

The high-energy performance by Ghanaian superstar, Stonebwoy was one of the highlights of the evening with his surprise appearance. The crowd erupted in excitement as he took the stage, and his electrifying presence set the party on fire.

The event also featured an African food market and popup shop extravaganza, where guests were treated to a diverse selection of African food and retail vendors.

From sumptuous traditional dishes to vibrant African fashion and crafts, the marketplace was a true celebration of African culture. It was surely a delightful experience as guests discovered new styles and took home a piece of the vibrant Afrobeats culture.
