Catching Up with Rising Star Laila Pruitt: Balancing Fame, Education, and Empathy

By: Latoya A. Vickers

On a picturesque sunny day in Los Angeles, a trio of stunning black women stroll into the hotel lobby, commanding attention with their presence. Among them is Laila Pruitt, the talented actress and rising star, known for her role in Starz’s hit drama series “BMF” (Black Mafia Family). As she greets me with her infectious smile, warm laughter, and heartfelt shoutout to “HU”, we embrace as if catching up after a long hiatus.

At just 19 years old, Laila is already a seasoned actress, having embarked on her journey in the entertainment industry at the tender age of 5. Over the years, she has shared screen space with megastars like Denzel Washington and Owen Wilson. Today, she graces our screens as Nicole Flenory in “BMF,” portraying the youngest member of the Flenory family with remarkable depth and authenticity. But today, she’s simply Laila, and we dive into our conversation with the ease of old acquaintances.

**Balancing Act: From Red Carpets to Dorm Rooms**

In the midst of her skyrocketing career, I inquire about how Laila manages to juggle the glitz and glamor of the red carpet with the rigors of her academic life at Howard University.

“I always have my team and my family with me,” she explains. “They help me navigate my schedule, and I collaborate closely with my professors, producers, and team to prioritize my commitments. Sometimes, it means hitting the books before strutting down the red carpet or squeezing in an audition between classes. It’s all about finding that balance and staying focused.”

**A Legacy to Uphold: Reflections on “BMF”**

When asked about her experience being part of a groundbreaking show like “BMF,” Laila’s eyes light up with humility and gratitude. “I’m truly honored to be part of such a significant project,” she shares. “Being able to embody a character like Nicole Flenory and delve into her complexities has been an incredible journey. I constantly draw inspiration from her resilience and strength.”

**Choosing Howard University: A Tribute to HBCUs**

Delving deeper into her decision to attend Howard University, Laila’s passion for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) shines through. “It was always going to be an HBCU for me,” she asserts. “Coming from a family with deep roots in HBCU culture, shoutout to the Rattlers of FAMU, I understood the importance of immersing myself in an environment that celebrates and uplifts Black excellence. Howard University felt like home from the moment I stepped foot on campus. It’s a place where I not only learn about my craft but also about myself and the rich history of my culture and community.”

**Empathy in Action: Laila’s Vision for the Future**

As our conversation veers towards broader themes of empathy and human connection, Laila shares her aspirations to make a meaningful impact beyond the realms of entertainment. “Empathy is a powerful tool,” she reflects. “If we could all learn to understand and resonate with each other’s experiences, imagine the positive change we could bring about. My hope is to be a catalyst for empathy, both on and off-screen.”

**Lessons Learned: Wisdom from the Greats**

Reflecting on her interactions with industry veterans like Denzel Washington and Owen Wilson, Laila emphasizes the importance of being a sponge and soaking in knowledge from those who have walked the path before her. “Observing the dedication and passion of actors like Denzel has been immensely inspiring,” she acknowledges. “It’s not just about the glitz and glamour; it’s about the relentless pursuit of excellence in one’s craft. Seeing that, at that moment I knew this was what I wanted to do.”

**A Note to Self: Trust the Journey**

In a heartfelt message to her future self, Laila offers words of encouragement and faith. “Laila, you doing good! Laila, trust God,” she affirms. “No matter how daunting the journey may seem, keep pushing forward. Believe that everything will fall into place in due time.”

As our conversation draws to a close, Laila expresses her gratitude and profound optimism  for the support and opportunities that have paved her path to success. With her unwavering passion, commitment to empathy, and dedication to her craft, there’s no doubt that Laila Pruitt is destined for greatness.

    Jack Grealish
The Manchester City midfielder, thanks to his love of fashion, managed to sign a lucrative advertising contract with the Gucci fashion house in 2022. The transaction amount amounted to € 1.6 million. Now he is the ambassador of the luxury brand. When choosing a candidate, factors such as the results of a football player on the field, appearance and social activity were important. Everything came together here!
