“I’m the professional bad guy. They hire me when they need a believable bad guy. I don’t know why,” ponders Howard during our phone chat the day before Thanksgiving. “I used to think I was the nicest person in the world.” –T. Howard
Few actors live lives that rival those they play on the big screen. But Terrence Howard just might. Since breaking through in a big way in The Best Man and earning an Oscar nomination for Hustle & Flow, it’s been hard to keep up with him. One minute he’s on top of the world and the next he seems to have pissed off everyone in it. Is he the good guy gone bad or just rotten to the damn core? Whichever it is, one thing is certain: never count him out. Whether we hate to love him as cynical playboy Quentin or the underdog Memphis pimp DJay we can’t help rooting for, he stays winning. And, with his latest power move as hip-hop mogul Lucious Lyon on FOX’s Empire, reuniting with his Hustle & Flow costar Taraji P. Henson, he’s got us in his orbit once again.
