There’s an endless amount of ways to meet people, but come to find out we were practically neighbors and never knew it. On a random day, we both were shopping at our local grocery store. I (Nicole) was running late to a cookout and tried to think of the easiest thing I could grab in the store, so I darted to the ice cream aisle. As I was was deciding on what flavor to pick, I looked up and saw this extra handsome man smiling really hard and staring. He walked over and suggested that I should get Ben & Jerry’s Late Night Snack (his favorite flavor). That sounded absolutely disgusting to me and I told him that I would pass and went back to perusing the aisle.
Well, Artis remained pretty persistent and we ended up sitting on the ice cream aisle for over an hour having conversation like we’ve known each other for years. We were finishing each other’s statements and getting in everyone’s way as they were trying to grab their items and go. I looked down at my phone and realized that I was beyond late and told Artis that I had to run. He asked me for my number and right before I left he asked me why I was still single. I usually get really annoyed by that question and respond with the typical “hey..it’s Atlanta” response but this time I responded with “everything in God’s time”. We both did that awkward stare thing for a second and then split ways.
Artis ended calling me that same night, which surprised me, and we ended talking for hours again. Now I am a true talker, some (my dad) would say I even talk too much, but Artis managed to out-talk me which had me intrigued from the very beginning.
Soon after, he asked me out on our first date to his favorite Italian restaurant. I tried to do the whole “be cute on the first date bit” but that all went out the door as soon as I dropped spaghetti all over my shirt. Luckily, we both got a really good laugh out of it and he kept saying he couldn’t believe how cool and genuine I was. We ended up having this elderly waiter that dropped dishes by us, moved really slow, forgot our order a few times, etc. At the end of the night he kept apologizing to us to us and looked so sad. I saw Artis pull out a piece of paper and a pen and write the waiter a very heartfelt thank you note and leave him such a huge tip. All I could think to myself was, wow what a heart!
From there, our love began to take root. It’s like we were already friends…and now we were just reconnecting. From our first date until today, we have both just really had each others back. We truly look forward to our closest friends and family sharing with us in a day where we pledge to the rest of our lives together in front of God and the people we love the most.
