To flaunt your full and fabulous figure, Bayou, a designer who has styled Oprah Winfrey and Queen Latifah, recommends boot-cut jeans. They create and define a waist and provide all-over balance. Georgia Smith, senior buyer of denim at plus-size retailer Ashley Stewart, suggests a straight leg with a fuller hip measurement to draw eyes down to the bottom of the leg and create a slimming effect.
A smaller waist in proportion to hips, butt and thighs can cause jeans to gape at the waist. “When a woman sits, the back of the jean should not come down,” says Smith. She recommends jeans with 1 to 2 percent stretch and adequate back and front rise. And she adds that dark washes help camouflage fuller thighs.
Petite frames should avoid the “dwarfing effect” that flared or cuffed jeans can create. “And no cropped jeans,” says Bayou, who has worked with Eva Longoria Parker, who is 5’2” inches. “Try styles that are long enough in length to go over heels.” To create the illusion of length, pair straight-leg or skinny jeans with stylish pumps or heeled boots.
You have a range of choices—flare, boot-cut, skinny, or straight-leg jeans, but whichever style you choose should not be too loose. Play up your shape by choosing jeans with flaps or embellishments on the pockets to enhance your backside and give the illusion of a fuller bottom.
Model-worthy height should be accentuated, not hidden. If your legs soar, your hemline shouldn’t; so be sure to choose styles with a longer inseam of at least 36 inches. Smith feels that tall women can best show off in straight-leg styles. Bayou agrees and adds that boot-cut jeans also flatter long legs. Trouser styles with a wide leg are a great alternative to boot-cut.
